HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WAFF) - The roller skating community is rejoicing as things are almost ready to roll at Stoner Park in Huntsville.

Huntsville Parks and Recreation Director James Gossett told WAFF 48 News that he hopes everyone has their roller skates ready by the end of summer, as the new open-air arena is getting close to its grand opening.

This is all part of an effort to improve Stoner Park, after several residents who have an interest in roller skating approached the city council with an idea for the skate rink.

The 19,000 square foot rink will also feature new restrooms and picnic facilities.

Gossett said it was important for Parks and Rec to make sure they are adding to the quality of life for this specific group.

“We are excited about it,” Gossett said. “Everything we do as far as Parks and Recreation looks towards quality of life for the citizens of Huntsville, and we think this will add another part of that for a different group that maybe we haven’t necessarily served in the past.”

Gossett said things are right on track with construction, and they only have a few cosmetic projects left before the grand opening, which is expected to take place at the end of July.
