Full Strawberry Moon Will be Visible Tonight in West Tennessee

WBBJ 7 Forecast Update

WBBJ 7 Forecast Update:

Tonight with the clear skies we will be able to see the lowest full moon in nearly two decades. Tonight’s full moon will be low on the southern horizon due to an phenomenon known as a major lunar standstill. A June full moon is called a Strawberry Moon because it was named by the Algonquian, the time they would pick their strawberries. The full moon occurs at 2:44 AM CT, but it will appear completely lit when it rises above the southeastern horizon just after sunset.

The moon will appear larger at moonrise along the horizon and could also likely take on a yellow-orange-reddish hue, because Earth’s atmosphere scatters shorter blue wavelengths of the sun’s reflected light. Also expect really nice weather through Thursday. Rain and storms chances will return on Friday and last into our Father’s Day Weekend. Catch the full forecast right here.

THIS WEEK:

Tuesday was a really nice day for all of West Tennessee. There was a few clouds but overall we saw a mostly sunny day. The winds were light and came out of the northwest and that kept both the temperature and the humidity down just a bit. Highs still reached the mid 80s though for most of us. Rain was no where to be seem and it is not in the forecast tonight. Tuesday night lows will fall down to around 60° to kick off our Wednesday.

Wednesday is  going to be another terrific day with sunny skies and light winds. The winds will shift to the south during the day and that will increase the temperature and humidity a little bit but it will not be overly hot for West Tennessee standards. Highs will reach the upper 80s but we should fall just short of 90°. We should stay mostly clear Wednesday night with overnight lows falling down to the mid to upper 60s.

Thursday is going to be a little weather and a bit humid as the next storm system will be getting a little closer. The rain should hold off for most of us until late Thursday night and most of the rain chances Thursday night will stay near the Mississippi River. Highs on Thursday will reach up to around 90°. Expect partly cloudy skies and the winds will be a tad breezy at times and come out of the south. Thursday night lows will drop down to around 70°.

Rain is looking likely on Friday and some storms are expected to mix in with the rain. The severe weather threat looks low with this system but there could be a severe storm or two so we will need to watch things closely on Friday and into the weekend as another stalled out system appears to be on the way. Highs on Friday will reach the mid to upper 80s depending on how early the showers and storms show up. Skies will be partly to mostly cloudy and the winds will continue to come out of the south. Friday night lows will fall down to the low 70s to start off our wet weekend.

FATHER’S DAY WEEKEND:

Showers and storms appear likely for our Father’s Day weekend unfortunately in West Tennessee. Chances for rain both days are at 60% as of now. Storms are expected to mix in but overall the severe weather threat appears to be on the low side. If you are planning a BBQ, going to the lake or river you need to monitor the forecast as the week goes on and we gain more confidence in the timing and severity of the storms that could develop. Highs will still reach the mid to upper 80s this weekend as we are expecting southerly winds to keep our temperatures up some. The big question with the weekend forecast will be where the front and system decide to stall out. There will be more clouds than sun this weekend. Both nights lows will drop into the low 70s.
